More Genshiken Nidaime!!

There’s no particular protagonist in the cast for Genshiken nor Genshiken Nidaime, but the closest people would be Sasahara for the original and Hato for Nidaime. For the original, the series began when Sasahara joined and ended when he left and for the new one, Hato is the first-year cast member who has received the most attention.

55 chapters took place over four years in Genshiken, but in Nidaime at the time of writing this there have been 63 chapters released in less than one year. I’m guessing that Chapter 118 is somewhere around February, so by maybe Chapter 130 the first year of Genshiken Nidaime will be over. That would make it 75 chapters for one year, and if Kio Shimoku decides to do all four years of Hato’s college life, then we would probably be in for quite a while longer.

11 chapters were spent on the first year of Sasahara’s time at college, and it almost certainly won’t be another 225 chapters of Genshiken Nidaime for the series to finish, so it’s not like an even amount of time is spent on each year. That said, I think that if Kio wants to continue the series for that full four in-series years we could probably expect it to continue for a while.

Just thought I’d mention it since I couldn’t find anybody else that had and I was thinking about the amount of time spent in the series. So since it’ll be a new school year soon, what kind of new people do you want to see join Genshiken? Kuchiki is the only one graduating if Ohno is staying another year which it seems like she is, so there really won’t be any guys left in Genshiken (unless you count Hato, but he’s a fujoshi anyway).

Not that anybody really should be interested in my opinion, but I think it’s actually kind of awkward where the cast is at now. Since most of the same people will be at Genshiken, we basically have five yaoi-people and while they all have their own niches, it may be a good idea to introduce other types of Otaku into the series.

If Shimoku wants to stick with more girl members, then maybe someone interested in visual novels, reverse harems, or the same types of content that Sasahara and the older members were into. We’ll probably see Yoshitake’s little sister, so we have a Shotacon. I think it could be interesting to see a new guy introduced who’s obsessed with yuri or gender bender things, since either would have good opportunities for comedy to contrast the given cast members.

Personally, if nobody new joined I would be just fine. I love the fujoshi atmosphere that Genshiken has right now and I wouldn’t grow tired of it easily. But I know that a lot of other people probably will grow tired of another 20-80 chapters of what Nidaime has already been, and I don’t think Genshiken is the type of manga series to grow stagnant.

Of course, this is all speculative and only relevant for someone reading this between the time of writing this and like, six months from now. Given that my reader base is currently 0 and probably won’t increase ever, I guess none of it really matters. But I’m writing it for my own sake rather than to garner attention.

So, nonexistent reader, what do you want to see in the next year of Genshiken Nidaime? Would the cast feel too big if Shimoku added more than Yoshitake’s little sister? Should he add more guys back? Should he add… more fujoshis? What do you call a yuri fan? Fujoshi and fudanshi refer to just BL to the extent of my knowledge.

All the pictures that showed up on Google Images that I liked were all from the Anime today, even though I’m only talking about the manga really. Odd!

And by the way, when I say someone interested in gender bender things I mean probably a guy who does not crossdress but likes to see other people crossdress and etcetera. Just to clarify. ^_^ I really think the dynamic would be interesting between that kind of character and Hato or Yoshitake’s little sister if she shows up pretending to be a guy too, but the dynamic would also be interesting between theoretical yuri fan and the rest of Genshiken too. (Or you could have someone interested in both?)

Similarities between Himemiya & Asriel

Very much spoils Revolutionary Girl Utena and Undertale. You have been warned.

Himemiya, from the anime and manga Revolutionary Girl Utena (of which I’ve only seen the anime mind you), and Asriel (or rather Flowey), from Undertale, are characters who share quite a few similarities. Let’s make a list-y thing!

Both Himemiya and Asriel are royalty, though one a princess and the other a prince.

Both characters have a martyr moment under fairly similar circumstances? With Himemiya, in an attempt to save her brother’s life, she sacrifices herself to humanity. With Asriel, in an attempt to save Chara’s life, he sacrifices himself to the humans.

Each end up being hated by the rest of the world (or at least the human world), demonized respectively, and actually turn out in their reincarnated or whatever form to be super twisted from the experience.

At the end, both characters end up returning to being “good” from their previous state of being kind of “evil” after the protagonist saves them with a selfless act that would have (or did) result in their death.

I think this character arc is kind of awesome, and thinking about it both have a protagonist who doesn’t obey strict gender norms, though this only really plays a role in Revolution Girl Utena. Anyway, not a super long or in-depth post. Just kind of occurred to me in the sleepless night (I have a terrible headcold at the time of writing this).

Genshiken: Hato x Madarame

Okay, I know I’m not, but I feel alone in my preference of Hato x Rame. Madarame for most of the original Genshiken series would have almost certainly gone for Sue of the four harem members present. After he finally came to terms with his feelings for Saki, though, he definitely changed as a character.

It’s true that Madarame is probably just about the best person for Sue to be with since none of the other characters can “get” Sue to the extent that he does. Similarly, Sue would seem like the best choice for Madarame given his general interests: Hato’s mainly interested in BL,  Keiko just isn’t interested in any anime or manga, and Angela, having very limited knowledge of Japanese, wouldn’t be able to talk to Madarame about really anything.

Genshiken Die

But I, being true to my fujoshi nature, can’t agree with that ship. It would be interesting, at least initially, to see the interaction between Sue and Madarame as a couple and their dynamic, but I think it would wear out quickly. Madarame and Hato, on the other hand, has much more potential as to where they can take it.

First, even if Rame was the one to pin down Hato, I think it’s still up for grabs as to who the uke and seme would be, which could be explored as they continue (though I’m guessing you can tell which I prefer going by the title).

Second, it’s more true to the current cast to have the male characters most prominent in the series right now be together. And despite everything in the past, it’d be the first potentially long term gay romance. Building off this, if Rame did choose Sue, then Hato would probably end up with Yajima, which would further destroy hope for any homosexual relationships. I love the dynamic between Hato & Yajima as characters, but I think that their dynamic works better as friends than as lovers (though I’ll admit it is interesting in Spotted Flowers). Just in general I’m so much more interested in relationships that aren’t hetero, since they’re at least about one-twentieth as frequent.

Third, I think that their differences in interests would actually make things more interesting. They’re both interested in the world of modern visual culture and I think it’d be interesting to see Hato take an interest in Gundam or anything else Rame cares about, and it’d be equally interesting to see Rame attempt to get into BL, especially to *study* for real life.

Madarame x Hato

Fourth, I think Hato would be better company for Rame. Though the two have their sets of antics which embarrass them in the presence of one another often, which I always am amused by, Hato would be the most calming of the harem members for Rame to be with. In some ways, Hato’s more level-headed than any of the other harem members and, most importantly, Hato’s the only one Rame feels comfortable talking to. Though that embarrassment is something that would dissipate over time with the other members, when Rame isn’t focused on being attracted to Hato he feels relaxed. Hato’s willing to listen to Rame and offer actual life advice, and I think that the girls are all a bit too high-strung for Rame to truly relax around.

Madarame Cooking

All of this said, I would not be against with Rame choosing Sue initially. Exploring their relationship, for a time, would be interesting and I would want to see the dynamic between Hato & Rame after that. This said, I’d worry less about Rame not changing his mind and more about Hato ending up with Yajima before Rame can reconsider his decision. I totally ignore Angela and Keiko simply because I think we’ve all agreed at this point that neither of them are going to happen in the main story.

Despite everything that Hato said in 110 about how Rame should choose a girl, I think that the two would be happiest with one another than with anyone else. Even if Rame may be the best choice for Sue or Hato the best for Yajima or Kon, what matters most is that the two in the relationship are happiest with one another.

Best to set the bar low in the first real post by poorly analyzing something way more complex than I can effectively explain.

To Start

I don’t know what this blog is or what I’m going to say. Maybe an Anime blog? Maybe things nobody cares about? Maybe (most likely) I’ll forget I ever made this blog and abandon it after one post?

Still, I’ve had a blog in some form since I was around five, and maintained either it or a journal or something for the majority of my life. I fancy myself a writer, though I have no context for the quality of it outside of a couple middle-school writing contests. I take an interest in fashion and dancing, but also programming and mathematics.

I want this blog to be like a conversation, I think. I want to write here things that I want to talk to people about rather than things I want to write about, if that makes sense.

At the moment, some of the things I like talking about most are Argentine tango, anime and manga, music (tango music), and sometimes gender and sexuality.

I’m young, currently at a point between high school and university, and generally I’m passionate about learning. I’m sure there are others out there who care more than I, but generally if there’s something I’m learning about in school, I try very hard to care about it. That’s probably why I enjoy talking about tango so much, since because I’m learning the dance, I’m also interested in everything else about it.

Regardless, let’s see what I post next.
